How do you turn someone down nicely?

Hey beauties.

Interesting thing happened to me the other day.

Went to a Chamber of Commerce Trade Show and was approached by a director/producer of some independent films who happens to be the founder of an international film festival I would like to attend and maybe volunteer with.

I actually checked his credentials and he was legit, with multiple news clippings about him. There are a lot of film submissions from around the world for the film festival, and he seems well connected in the community.

At first things seemed harmless; he just said he needed "smart" people on his team. He wants me to be either the celebrity liaison or in submissions outreach for this big extravagant "Hollywood-style," gown-wearing red carpet night at the performing arts center film festival.

BUT Later on, he asked me interest questions like: oh you do jewelry, so what is your favorite gemstone. and "we should go for coffee," which I turned down.

After I said I can't, he talked more but then followed it by a "next time I call I'm going to ask you about going to watch a movie and go for coffee to talk about your jewelry."

The next day, he emailed me with an invite to the gala at the red carpet opening night at the Phil Center of the Arts. That was fine, but

then he wrote " I didn't forget about the movies. How about Sunday night?"

How do I turn down someone without being mean?

I'm still really interested in helping out with the film festival! It sounds like such an interesting opportunity and I don't want to offend the founder! How do I casually mention my bf?

Help girls! I asked my bf (bf if you're reading AHEM) but he said I'm on my own because he's already warned me about the guy.

Did you guys know that Emmy Rossum had an album??

Maybe I'm late in discovering but beautiful and ever so talented Emmy Rossum from the movies Phantom of the Opera, The Day After Tomorrow, Poseidon, and Dragonball Evolution had a cd out back in 2007. In it is the most amazing song I recently discovered. Wished it was sooner!

The song "Slow Me Down" is such a beautiful and meaningful song about the rush of everyday life and the discovery of love that puts everything back into perspective. It sounds like an acappella with a marriage of her voice creating a breathy, beautiful piece of music. It's very soothing, at least to me =P.

The music video is so beautiful as well. She's such a natural beauty. Her voice is so amazing!

Watermelon SuperFruit Mask and B.Essentia Jewelry Launch Preview

Hey Beauties!

I just wanted to share with you girls the benefits of a watermelon and yogurt mask. I find that home-made masks are a lot more effective without leaving excess products or use of chemicals.

If you enjoy chemical free and natural masks, this one is for you.

I've been making a watermelon mask for the past two months now, and I find it really soothing and refreshing.

It leaves my skin feeling smooth and hydrated as well. Yogurt acts as a light exfoliator as watermelon had been said to have a face-lifting and hydrating effect.

Ingredients:

This recipe is enough to share. You can use is maximum of 3 people.

12 cubes of seedless ripe watermelon flesh.
2 spoonfuls of plain yogurt.

Instructions:

1. Remove make-up from face with gentle cleanser.

2. With one cube watermelon, rub cube onto face until face is thoroughly covered.

3. With clean fork, smash the watermelon until a pulppy consistency.

(Please do not put in blender because some of the beneficial phytochemicals might be destroyed if blended for too long).

4. Combine and blend the watermelon with yogurt, until pink in color.

If you think there might be too much watermelon juice, first place the pulp into the yogurt then add sparingly the watermelon juice.

5. Spread a thick coat evenly onto clean skin and wait until dried. Approximately 15 minutes.

Warning: Although some may not be allergic to food products ingested, this doesn't completely indicate that the skin is out of danger for manifesting an allergic reaction. To be completely safe, use a small amount of the blended mask and test it on a patch of skin behind your ears. If red or itchy, DO NOT USE THIS MASK, as it may cause adverse effects on the health of your skin!

Stop Thinking and Canada Trip Pictures

Hi Beauties!

I've been moping for the last past week. I really need to stop thinking about everything. It only makes matters worse.

Luckily, I am such a lucky girl to have such a wonderful support system. =) Thank you so much for your loving support. Your words always find a way to cheer me up.

I miss Bebe jumping and hopping everywhere. It was so cute when she used to hide in the flowerbeds; she thinks that I couldn't see her, even if I touch her head... But...

And sorry for not telling you guys but I had two bunnies. One was Bebe and I still have Cookie. I bought Cookie a few months after Bebe because I thought Bebe was getting lonely (and very very grouchy) so I decided to get a companion for her to play with. I was so afraid that they won't get along. I was very careful introducing them, but they were great together.. =)

I need to move on and stop thinking about it. Thus, the happy music =). And on with the happier things in life.... :)

The trip to Canada was amazing. I fell in love with everywhere I went. This trip made me want to become a Canadian =P.

Everyone that lives in western Canada is so lucky to have such a beautiful environment to live in! All the streets were surprisingly clean; the water here is so clear!! And I am happy to announce that every single one of the bathrooms I've visited are PRISTINE even the outhouses at Lake Emerald (lol for those who know I have an obsession for clean bathrooms =P).

All in all I took about 1,500 pictures during the entire 8 days I was in Canada (and Seattle). I really want to post it alllll BUT you will get bored and it will take TOOO long!

Here are some of the highlights:
I'm just going to name the places where I took the pics because we honestly did a whirlwind trip around all the places.

Mode of Travel:

Although this isn't the most glamorous way to travel, it is the most economical way to travel.

It was actually pretty enjoyable to travel in the big air-conditioned tour bus. Smooth, safe ride with comfortable seating.

If you understand Mandarin, happen to be in the BC area, and love to visit the Canadian Rockies and surrounding areas, I recommend travelling with

We turned to a tour group because my family can get lost crossing the street, let alone places we've never been =P.

We wanted to make the most use of our time and see the most places at a time, so if we were to go back again, we can pinpoint the areas we would like to concentrate more time in. I think we paid around $1000 CAD for each person to go around Vancouver, Victoria, Canadian Rockies and Seattle. The Victoria and Canadian Rockies trips included meals, which wasn't the best meals but they weren't bad (I like Chinese food though lol).

Overall, very happy with the whole experience. I felt like this is the most care-free family trip we've been on because we didn't get lost once and everything was planned for us =). Of course, we found our own hotel reservations in Vancouver for 4 nights (Vancouver, Victoria and Seattle were only day trips, which I thought wasn't as worth it as it was to go to the Canadian Rockies).

Pros: No navigation needed!

All inclusive packages include hotel reservations and all meals. This tour also includes a night's stay at the BEAUTIFUL Chateau Lake Louise, which usually run for 300-500 CAD a night! I would go back on this tour just to stay at that hotel. The scenary is absolutely breath-taking. My mom and I got to jog around the lake in the morning and it was sooo beautiful. Took lots of pictures but I'm so sad I don't get to post all of it... It'll get boring if I do =P.
Knowledgable and (mostly) honest tour guide. Flowered mouth though lol. I just let the tour guide worry about my itinary. He picks the most beautiful places to have a pit stop at! You just have to sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenary around you. Perfect for the foreigner unfamiliar with the area.
AND we were extremely lucky because everyone in the tour group was super nice, talkative and courteous! Ranging from families, doctors, to college students, the group itself was a dynamic and entertaining to enjoy the beautiful experience with.

Cons:

Rushed synopsis view of the area, which is good and bad at the same time. You get to visit a lot of places but in a very short period of time. BUT that's what you get in a tour group =P.
Also, this tour bus was for Mandarin speakers. I understand Manderin but talking was just an embarrassment. I am told I have a Cantonese accent, and I have to translate English to Cantonese to Mandarin to understand what they're saying =P. If you're adequate in Mandarin, this is a great tour group!!

Misfortune

Hi Beauties.

I'm so sorry for not updating. I came back from vacation last week. I had a great time in Canada, where I got to stay in Vancouver and toured around Victoria, the surrounding towns in the Canadian Rockies like Lake Louise, Banff, and other tourist places to name a few. We also went to Seattle.

However, when I came back, I was too upset to update on anything. For 2 and a half years, my lionhead bunny, Bebe, had been everywhere that I have been. She was more than just a pet but a reassuring constant sweet soul that unknowingly brightened up my day for just being herself.

I discovered that she passed away while I was on vacation. It was a very upsetting day. Our fridge was broken for no apparant reason, our luggage was delayed and we almost missed our flight. My pet/house sitter insists that Bebe seemed fine the entire time that he was over at my house. I don't know what went wrong... I've been so upset because I wasn't there to help her.
=( It's been a week now, and I still can't believe she's just gone. Lionheads are supposed to live 5-10 years..

I realized that in life there are never absolute constants. Each moment spent are just fleeting moments that need to be properly cherished.

Thank you everyone for your constant support. I will update soon with pictures from the trip and update other things. I've been working on launching a jewelry blog and also been working on some pieces that I had been excited about. I just need a name...

Rest in peace Bebe.... you were the sweetest bunny....

Quick Update and Week Hiatus

Hey beauties!

Thank you so much for all your sweet comments! So Sorry I didn't reply a lot of yours, but I've been busy trying to plan for this spur trip that my family is going to. My mom, at the last minute decided to go to Canada for a week. I'm so excited about it!!! We'll be doing a whirlwind tour of western Canada in a short week. My mom planned most of it out... so we'll be getting a taste of different places like Victoria, Vancouver, Banff and surrounding area and... maybe Seattle because we've never been there? Ooff... I don't know... lol...

BUT I have to thank Kym for recommending some great places for us to do while in Vancouver! Thank you so much! If you haven't checked out her site yet, please do. She's such a sweet person and she makes the funniest/cutest shirts!

I hate to keep doing this to you guys.. I keep posting non-beauty/non-make up posts but I PROMISE that there will be more beauty posts soon! I have a few things up my sleeve like...

How To Treat First Degree Burns

Sometimes, the lack of attention can leave unwanted reminders of our mistakes with daily home items such as curling irons, straigtening irons, and even burns from a hot metal pot or pan.

As some of you might have read that recently my clumsiness had allowed me to gain knowledge for this shared blog entry.

As first degree burns are minor burns, it takes only a few days, approximately 3-9 days to heal. However, treatment of these burns, however minor, should be handled with diligence or else it is likely that it would heal in a darker hue. I have had this happen to me many times and I have had many reminders on my body because of that. I didn't want an additional reminder right on my forehead.

These tips helped me prevent the formation of hyperpigmentation that is sometimes seen with first degree burn accidents.

Helpful Products

1. Gentle cleanser such as Korres Orange Blossom Emulsion. For review, please click here.
2. Neosporin

3. Water-Jel Burn Jel Plus

I highly highly recommend this product! This product contains 2.5% Lidocaine HCl, which basically acts as a local anesthetic that blocks voltage-gated sodium channels from sending action potentials to the brain for pain. This product also contains Vitamin E which help soften and prevent scarring and tea tree oil, which has antiseptic properties. This can also be used on minor sunburns and scalds as well. Very very handy to have in your at home First Aid Kit!

Optional: Homemade hydrating watermelon mask

Immediately After Accident:

R- R- P

1. Remove the shock.

Immediately place cool water around burn area if the skin is not broken. Do not use ICE for the accident might have peeled away layers of the epidermis and leave skin extra sensitive. Ice would cause too much stress on the already damaged skin cells.

2. Relieve the pain.

Soothe the area with Water-Jel Burn Jel Plus.

3. Prevent infection and further stress.

Make sure that the area is clean at all time so that infections do not occur. Apply Neosporin or another antibacterial cream onto affected area and also make sure that the area is clear of hair or debris at all times. Neosporin is an antibiotic cream speeds up the healing process by preventing infections. It traditionally contain three types of antibiotic such as bacitracin, neomycin, and polymyxin B. If you are allergic to neomycin, please apply other ointments such as Polysporin (double antibiotic ointment).

6 Pieces of Advice for Proper Healing

1. If the burn is on the facial area, make sure to use a gentle cleanser.

Make sure the cleanser is gentle and non-irritating such as Korres Orange Blossom Emulsion or another cleanser. Other gentle cleansers include Purpose Gentle Cleansing Wash. The purpose is to not irritate the skin more than it already is so it heals properly. So, make sure to avoid cleansers with exfoliating beads or exfoliating properties.

2. Continue to use antibiotic cream.

Apply Neosporin on the first few days until the burn turns into a scab. When scab develops, after washing face or showering, immediately apply Water-jel Burn Jel Plus to keep the area hydrated. The vitamin E from the product will absorb better into skin.

Note: Water-Jel Burn Jel is a great fast acting pain relief gel for minor burns that emergency care professionals sometimes use. However, I did find that it clogged my pores because I had a huge blemish right next to my scar for a bit. My advice is to aim in applying a thick layer around the burn only.

3. Make sure you do not pick or peel away scab.

It is there to allow proper healing!

4. Make sure your skin is properly hydrated.

I used a gentle, cooling watermelon mask to make sure my skin, especially around the burned area is properly hydrated which helps it heal properly. I also used a good moisturizer in around my entire face.

5. Avoid the sun as much as possible.

UVA and UVB rays are harmful enough on regular skin. Imagine how damaging it would be on already damaged skin!

6. Allow the scab to peel off by itself.

This indicates that the skin has fully healed.

Burn Off! (Finally!) and Jewelry Prototype

My Burn Mark Finally Peeled oFFF!! =)

About nine days ago, klutzy me decided that I should play with a curling iron but ironed my forehead instead, leaving me with a really big burn mark on my forehead.

At one point, this bad boy looked like I had a really big tattoo of a mitochondria on my forehead. Yup. That's how much I love science! (no... not really... like the science part but not enough to tattoo cell membranes on my forehead). =P

Since I scar very easily, I became really diligent about applying burn cream, Neosporin, doing masks, and trying to avoid the sun. I am happy to announce that besides a little discoloration for now, the burn mark completely disappeared since the day before yesterday! It peeled off like I was shedding snake skin.

So... I decided to play with the camera. As usual... Lol.

Did turqoise eyeshadow on bottom lashline and wore the big hoop earrings that I made with turquoise swarovski crystals white pearls and sterling silver wires.

You can notice the discoloration on the left forehead (my right your left). The skin is a little lighter than the rest since I tanned at Islands of Adventure. It was really hard to avoid the sun, but I would put my hand up or wear a cap so that the UV rays do not affect and darken the burn mark. I didn't try to put any foundation or concealer on it since that might affect the healing process as well, so I avoided pictures with all my life. =P

I will update on the process at which I got rid of the burn mark. If anyone is as klutzy as I was to have ironed their forehead. A few products really helped me and so did the watermelon mask! I will give you all the information next time!

and what do you girls think of prototype numero uno (the hoop earrings). Too urban? Too big? Any interest in hoop earrings or scrap that?

The Honest Scrap Tag!

Good Monday my lovely ladies.

I hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July! I had a lot of fun with my family at Islands of Adventure. I've never been before but I really like the park since it has a whole range of rides that are great for the whole family from Dr. Seuss's Land for the younger kids, some water rides, and awesome roller coasters like the Hulk (amazing!).

I didn't take that many pictures. It was too hot and I got lazy lol. It was so hot everyone were in bathing suits, and per usual we had sporadic rain showers throughout the afternoon.

Now back to business!

Lovely Ms. Closet Rebel recently tagged me for the Honest Scrap Tag. Thank you hun. You're so great! <3 size="5">1. Straight out of high school, I got licensed as an esthetician.
So now, I am able to give facials, back facials, etc., know a thing or two about skin, and am licensed to give microdermabrasions and intense light pulse therapy. You can't really tell cuz my skin is messed up (I react to stress through my skin very easily blaah). And if you see more pictures, I have a dot on my nose. I swear it's not a pimple. Unfortunately, it's a broken capillary from the pressure of my glasses, etc. =( It's been there for like... two years now. =\.

2. I love all types of music, as you can probably tell if you visited my page during these weeks. It could range from country, to rap, to hip hop, to pop, to alternative, to rock, to dance, to some screamo (! some.. not the really screamy type lol) and I also like vocal like Sarah Brightman. I'm pretty random. I like anything that's good. I guess it depends on my mood that month, week, day, or minute. =P

3. My favorite foods are probably comfort foods like mashed potatoes or saucy foods. I love sushi! I love Korean food. I love PHO! I love eating in general. I'll try everything at least once but I try to be health conscious. Sometimes that obviously doesn't work out so well.

4 . I have a habit about checking restuarant's bathrooms. If I go out to eat, I like to visit the bathroom inspect the cleanliness of the restroom, even when there are times that I don't necessarily have to use it. My theory is that if their bathrooms are clean, that will provide me with the general idea of how sanitary the owners/managers keep their entire establishment. The ultimatum is clean bathrooms, excellent food and great customer service is a sure-win for me to come back to eat again.

5. I love anything coconut. =)

6. In high school, I always used to wear platform sandals because they were just so comfortable and easy to put on. I slouched a lot since it added maybe 2-3 inches to my height (I'm 5'7). Now I wear a lot of flip flops although I love heels. My boyfriend is not that much taller than I am.

7. I never went to senior prom so my boyfriend dedicated a prom-like event at his university called The Winter Ball Semi-Formal for me since he was the president of his club. He made me so embarrassed but happy when he said that he loved me and showered dedications to me on the stage. I'm really glad that it became an annual event since that year =).

8. I've known my bf for 4 years and 5 months now. He first was attracted to me because of my awesome dance moves. He liked how I danced with my back. Okay, maybe not really. We first met when he and his frat buddies visited my college for a dorm party. During the night, he just came up to me to dance and we talked for a long while afterwards. He said his first impression of me was that I was that tall(er) asian girl who danced with her back, which he thought was strange, but we hit it off and have been together since. =)

9. My first piece of jewelry that I made literally took me 6-7 hours to complete. They were dangling chandelier earrings. My friend and I went to the bead boutique for hours to finish the design. I find it relaxing =). Thankfully, I graduated from that point to less than 6 hours to complete a piece of jewelry.

10. I'm not sure why but sometimes it's hard for people figure out what my nationality is but I look pretty ___________ to me? I lied one time and said that I was ______and _______ or something, and this unsuspecting boy believed me. Ha! Can you guess what I am? =P

Edit: I guess I might as well include an eleventh fact: I'm self-conscious so I tend to my hyper-critical about my actions. That leads to my incessant changing of the blog lol. If you come back and you see a different rainbow color splattered every other second.... it's me being... I don't know. Weird. Same with the music lol .

After not shopping for more than a few months, walking around the malls were like a kid stunned and awed at a candy shop. lol. I did a little bit of damage and bought some things from the shops and online.

Swarovski

I love stud earrings, and these are just so elegant! My cousin said these remind them of pizza slices though. lol. Although I make jewelry myself, I can't make something like this because they are machine made and shaped metal.

I also bought my cousin Swarovski bow earrings for her bday. They are so extremely cute!!!! I really wanted to keep them myself. I don't have pics of them :(.

TJ Maxx

My bf thinks that shopping at stores like TJ Maxx is not so great (he thinks they sell flawed items), but I don't believe that at all! I love TJ Maxx! They have really great stuff, like this Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy Eau de Perfum Gift Set for $49!!!

I bought just 1.7 fl oz. for $65 at Macy's, but then found this absolute steal. I immediately grabbed it and returned the other one! This set includes the same 1.7 fl oz., a shower gel and moisturizer for $49 which would run for $$70-90!!!

Summer is at its prime and what is a better for summer than the classic summer dessert: the scrumptuous and sweet watermelon!

I just wanted to share this great watermelon and arugula salad with you guys. It's a great alternative to serving it the traditional way as a dessert fruit!

This recipe is extra simple but adds a great twist to the serving of a classic summer fruit and is perfect for those hot summer days!

Quick Nutritional Facts:

Low calorie and completely edible fruit: 92% of it is water and low in cholesterol, total fat and saturated fats. Perfect hydrator for those hot summer days. 1 diced cup barely has 40 calories! Can eat rinds, seeds and all!
Great Heart Health: Studies show that eating watermelon can increase important amino acids such as arginine (for healthy hearts and arteries!). It actually increases citrulline, which synthesizes arginine.

Watermelon and Arugula Salad Appetizer

Satiates: 4 (light lunch sized meals)

Ingredients:

Watermelon (cubed)- 1/4 of whole
Baby arugula- 3-4 cups
Red Onion (paper thin sliced rings)- 1/2
Extra Virgin Olive Oil- about 2-3 tablespoons
Toasted Pine nuts (approx. 40 kernels)- Handful
Lime juice- 1/2 Lime
Salt and Pepper

*Most recipes have this with feta cheese but I really enjoy the lightness of just the watermelon and arugula. But you can add if you want to =).

The Five Stepper:

Mix lime juice, extra virgin olive oil, pinches of salt and pepper together and set aside.

Quick blanche thin onion rings in a small skillet with the bottom rimmed with water until opaque. (half cooked half uncooked) Gets rid of some of the strong onion taste and that undesireable onion breath.

In salad bowl, make a bed with most of the arugula on the bottom of the bowl.

Place diced watermelon over arugula bed and sprinkle arugula sprigs on top; Sprinkle the onions next then the pine nuts.
Drizzle with the lime juice and oil mix.

For better results place saran wrap over the top of the salad bowl and refridgerate the watermelon salad for approximately 30 minutes. This will allow the sweet watermelon juice to settle out and make a great taste as "light dressing".

Divide and enjoy this refreshing delight!

Calories breakdown (per serving):

Watermelon: 46 calories/1 cup diced. + Argula: 2 calories/ .5 cups. + Pine nuts: 10 calories/ 10 kernels + Olive Oil: 62 calories/ .5 tablespoons = 120 calories!

*these are rough estimates with nutritiondata.com. I tried to be as true as possible, although lime was left out because it only has 6 calories for half a lime.
